On one of the hottest days so far this year, Keith Bowers and myself set about removing the large tree just at the bottom of peg 1, downstream from Cressage bridge. This was not an easy task, but putting our new tractor to good use and also employing a very good block and tackle (see picture) we managed to remove most of it. We now just need to cut the remainder in half with a chain saw and haul the two pieces out with the tractor.
An update: At the second (very soggy) work party on 12 June, those who turned out managed to get half of what was left out of the river, after cutting it off. By the time we had hauled the remaining stump to the top of the bank, we were all exhausted and when we tried to pull it clear with the tractor, it just rolled back down the bank! Never mind, once we get another decent day, we will get it completely out.

As the river was, at long last, at about it's normal level, the Scramble Match scheduled for the last Sunday of the season, 13 March, was fished in conjunction with the sixth and final leg of the Winter League.
Carl Pavey was the eventual winner with 64 Lbs 9 Ozs, 14 Barbel and one chub (Click on DSC00085.jpg below for a picture of Carl with his winning weight). Second was Tony Randall from peg 80 with 33 Lbs 11 Ozs and third was Eric Rimmer from peg 88 with 24 Lbs 2 Ozs. Carl's 64 Lbs was not enough to stop Tony Randall from taking the league with just 10 penalty points, leaving Carl in second place with 15 and Dave Upton and Ken Arnold on 16. But Dave edged third place on weight. For the full Winter League result, click on the link.
