On the morning of 7th January 2018, 11 anglers turned out for this extra match on the Laneside Pool at Melverley Fishery. It was very cold, with an overnight hard frost and a cold NE wind. The pool had ice in the margins, but the sun was bright for most of the day. Eventual winner was Graham Jones with a 22 Lbs 8 Ozs bag, mostly taken in the last 90 minutes on the waggler with meat as a bait for some good chub and a nice carp too, from close to the island. Second, from the "Babby Swim" was that improving pole angler Brian Tinman with 12 Lbs 2 Ozs made up of one "lump" carp taken early on with light tackle on the long pole and some skimmers and roach taken on the same method. Third, from the next peg, was Ken Arnold with a bag of 11 Lbs 14 Ozs. Ken persevered on the pole even after losing a real "lump" carp early on, mostly due to having to play it beyond the ice in the margin, but resorted to his favourite waggler and meat method to take a couple of smaller carp off the island edge towards the end of the match. Just think of the weight it might have been if that early fish had not been lost! Everyone else caught and the match was most enjoyable, despite the cold day.
