SECOND WINTER LEAGUE MATCH 2017/18 RESULT

by Bernie Jones 21 November 2017

On a very still, mild day for 19th November, 17 anglers contested this second leg of the LAS Winter League fished on the finicky Hough pool, near Wem. Although there had been no frost, fish were hard to find, but local man (well he is since he bought his first pole last year!) Brian Tinman, showed us all how it is done by putting 8 Lbs exactly on the scales using bread punch fished against the margins. Second (I am pleased to say) was yours truly, with 5 Lbs 4 Ozs, using the long pole against the island and on the first step with mainly bread punch and some pinkies. Third was Ken Arnold with exactly 5 Lbs, again using the long pole with bread punch and pellet hook baits. This means that Brian now leads the league with 19 points, Ken is second with 18 and Clive Biddulph is third with 12. The next match, on 3rd December, will be on the Birches Pool at Melverly fishery and with another eight matches to go, there's everything to fish for. Click on the link for the full result.

FIRST WINTER LEAGUE 2017/18 MATCH RESULT

by Bernie Jones 16 November 2017

It was a nice mild day on the 5th November to start with, but later turned very wet for this first 2017/18 Winter League match on the river. But it was that man again, Ken Arnold, who showed his class once again with a bag of 33 Lbs 8 Ozs from his favoured peg 75 (I think he must now know all the fish by their first names!) Second was Brian Tinman, with 19 Lbs 14 Ozs from unfavoured peg 27 and third was Ant James from peg 76 with exactly 15 Lbs. By the way Ant, Ken reckons that the reason you only caught in the first half of the match was because he stopped feeding meat up the inside for you! For the full result, just click on the link.

Round 2 is to be fished on Hough Pool on 19 November. Please remember to bring two keep nets.

CORMORANT WATCH

by Bernie Jones 4 November 2017

The Angling Trust, of which LAS is a member, has released this very useful website. Many thanks to member Paul Stych for notifying me of this. Please make a note of it (especially if you have a Smartphone) and use it to report sightings of this pesky nuisance.

SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH 10 RESULT

by Bernie Jones 4 November 2017

The final match of the 2017 Summer League was fished on a very windy, but dry day that was mostly mild with broken cloud. The downstream wind made it impossible to fish the float in most pegs and the leaves on the river bed made it difficult for the fish to find a feeder fished bait. The resulting weights were therefore lower than normal at this time of the year. But it was Colin Morris that mastered the conditions in peg 118 and put 16 Lbs 4 Ozs on the scales. Second was Graham Jones from peg 81 with a chub taken early on and a good barbel taken in the last hour, for a weight of 10 Lbs exactly. Third place went to Brian (no sick note!) Tinman from peg 8 with 8 Lbs 14 Ozs. The battle for the overall winner of the league went down to the wire, with Ken Arnold finishing fourth, which was good enough to pip Graham Jones by 73 to 69 points. Just as well you decided to fish the 9th match Ken!

The first Winter League match is set to be fished on the river on 5 November. Let's hope there are no fishy fireworks that result!
