After a strange skimmer and roach death on the Birches Pool at Melverley Pools during the week, hopes were not high for a good match to round off this year's Winter League series on 13th March. But with a reasonable day of milder weather, but no rain, the wind made float fishing a little challenging. For those that stuck it out on the tip, this proved to be the best method on the day. Bob Smith ran out winner with a bag of some good carp for 23 Lbs 12 Ozs. Second was Gordon Bradley who was just pipped by 7 Ozs with a similar net of carp for 23 Lbs 5 Ozs - having been pegged next to Gordon he should have won it, because he pulled out of the first 3 fish he hooked, any one of which would have given him the win; but that's fishing isn't it. Third, with 16 Lbs 12 Ozs was Brian Tinman, who for once had to resort to fishing the feeder, instead of his favoured waggler and meat approach. This means that the League winner is Ken Arnold with 50 points, second is Nick Bastock with 42 and third is Gordon Bradley with 38. Well done all of you and let's see if the rest of us can do better next year!
Bob Smith has commented that we must be daft to fish these matches through the worst of the wineter weather and maybe we should think about having a match series during the river closed season instead, when at least the rain should be warmer! What does everyone else think? Please let Will Carr know and perhaps we could do this for next year?
