FIFTH WINTER LEAGUE MATCH RESULT

by Bernie Jones 18 February 2016

Swallow Pool at Monkhall Fisheries was frozen over on Sunday morning 14th February, but after a hearty breakfast at their excellent cafe, 14 anglers turned out to fish this fifth round of the 2015/16 Winter League. There was a biting Easterly wind blowing for most of the 5 hour match, which made it very uncomfortable if you were not properly togged up. After a slow start, everyone caught and caught well, considering the conditions. The ice only completely melted after about 2 hours. However, it was that man again, Nick Bastock that ran out winner with a net of mainly F1's for 24 Lbs 1 Oz. Nick fished the long pole with maggot and pellet to tempt fish mostly towards the end of the match. On the next peg Gordon Bradley managed to finish with a similar mixed bag that contained at least one fair sized carp for 20 Lbs 5 Ozs - on the pole! (very unusual for him!). Third was yours truly (in the money again!) from the next peg with 20 Lbs using 7 metre pole and maggot/pellet on the hook. Ken Arnold, the league leader, drew the peg right by the aerator, which he was told would kill the swim even though it had been switched off - and it did! He only finished in 8th place as a result. However, with 2 matches to go, Ken's unassailable lead on 41 points is unlikely to be passed by Nick Bastock in second place with 28 points, or me with 26 in third. The next match is on 28th February at Melverley Pools and Ken really knows how to fish this, so we are now probably fishing for second place - but you never know!
