SUMMER LEAGUE 2018 FINAL RESULT

by Bernie Jones 29 October 2018

On a dry, but breezy, day 8 pairs of anglers contested this last match of the 10 match Summer League for 2018. This was a replacement match for the Wines & Spirits match we have usually fished for this leg of the league and was a reslut of most anglers wanting a chance to win some pools money instead of a bottle or two. It also meant that some of those anglers who don't often frame having a share of the spoils. The river had dropped from its spate earlier in the week, but much of the colour had dropped out of it, due to some low overnight temperatures. Individual winner from peg 103 was our Match Secretary Will Carr with a couple of chub and a good barbel for exactly 16 Lbs. Second was yours truly from the next peg 102 with 13 Lbs 6 Ozs of dace taken on the whip and maggot. Third from peg 95 was Ant James with 12 Lbs 8 Ozs that consisted of a barbel, a chub a perch and some dace taken on a variety of baits. However, the pairs result was more interesting. Here is the complete list:

1st Will Carr & Ant James 28 Lbs 8 Ozs
2nd Bernie Jones & Pat Nolan 13 Lbs 6 Ozs
3rd Clive Biddulph & Gordon Bradley 11 Lbs 8 Ozs
4th Nick Bastock & Kevin Nicholls 10 Lbs 8 Ozs
5th Colin Morris & Dennis Carr 5 Lbs 12 Ozs
6th Ray Armstrong & Arthur Foyle 3 Lbs 8 Ozs
7th Brian Tinman & Gary Stinton DNW

Of course, the overall league had already been won by Paul Harrison (so he didn't bother to fish this match) with 75 points. Second was Graham Jones with 69 and third was Clive Biddulph with 56.

SUMMER LEAGUE RESULT - MATCH 9

by Bernie Jones 18 October 2018

After the first frost of the Autumn, the fish were going to be tough to encourage to feed, but there was a very good turn-out for this match with over 20 of us fishing. The weather brightened up and was quite pleasantly warm after the first couple of hours and with the river carrying about 2 feet of water the colour was good. Winner, from Peg 22, was Brian Tinman with 12 Lbs 2 Ozs. Second, from Peg 75, with 11 Lbs 12 Ozs, was Dave Leary. Third, from Peg 97, with 10 Lbs exactly, was Will Carr. As Paul Harrison managed a further 6 points and Graham Jones had just 4 to add to their respective tallies, this means that Paul with 75 points cannot now be caught by Graham on 62 and so will be crowned as Club Champion for 2018.

The 10th and final match will NOT be the usual Wines & Spirits, but to add a little interest to proceedings it will be a pairs match with pools money hopefully being distributed to a few regulars who rarely make the frame. It should add a new dimension to the contest anyway!

DAVE HUMPHRIES' BARBEL

by Bernie Jones 9 October 2018

For any member, like me, who has not yet had a "double" weight barbel, this will make you jealous! Dave Humphries used a Hardy Specimen 2lb TC rod and a 1979 Abu Cardinal 54 reel with a light arlesley bomb and a size 6 barbless hair rig loaded with luncheon meat to take this beautiful 10 Lbs 5 Oz fish. So, they are there to be caught!

SUMMER LEAGUE RESULT - MATCH 7 AND 8

by Bernie Jones 5 October 2018

Well, 2018 is turning out to be quite a year for Paul Harrison, who just can't seem to draw a poor peg. The one to have for match 7 was definitely 97 and that's just what he drew - and capitalised on it by winning the match with 27 Lbs 4 Ozs, which consisted of 8 small barbel and a chub. Second, with a weight of 17 Lbs 8 Ozs taken from his favourite peg 5, was Brian Tinman and third with 16 Lbs 2 Ozs from difficult to get to peg 94, was Graham Jones. The river was still very low and clear and desperately needed some rain.

Due to our Match Secretary's work and holiday commitments, the 8th match was fished whilst he was taking a well earned rest in Greece (well someone had to I suppose!). The river got the rain it needed, but rather too much of it! With 2.7m above normal, a lot of anglers thought the match might be cancelled, so just 8 of us turned out in lovely warm sunny weather, whilst the river dropped through the match by over 30cm. All pegs were put in Cressage meadow and it was yours truly that ran out winner with 3 Lbs 8 Ozs from peg 12, of mainly dace taken on the whip in mid-water. Second was that man again, Paul Harrison, from fancied peg 33 with 2 Lbs exactly and third with just 1 Lb 4 Ozs from peg 26 was Graham Jones.

It is starting to look like Paul is running away with the league on 69 points, with Graham in second on 58 and Clive Bidduph third with 44. Will Paul win? Or, will Graham catch him? Find out here.
