The incredibly hot weather continued and with no rain for some weeks the river was extremely low and clear on 15th July. Selecting those pegs that would produce fish in this first float only match was therefore a challenge. Actually putting fish in the net was an even grater one! Jason Owen had fished peg 9 in the previous week and had over 150 Lbs of chub from it using stick float and maggot. So, it was with great delight that his guest for the day, Rob Quinn, almost ran to the peg when he drew it. Prior knowledge, and a bit of telephonic coaching from Jason, enabled him to put an impressive 46 Lbs 8 Ozs on the scales for a win. Although not in the points for the league, Rob is now seriously considering becoming a member! Second, from one of the longest walks on the river, was Clive Biddulph with 14 Lbs 4 Ozs from peg 98. Clive put his platform in the middle of the river and took mainly bleak, dace and chublets on the stick float and maggot and said he didn't use his landing net all day. Third from peg 94, a difficult swim as you cannot sit down because the bank is so steep, was Graham Jones with 13 Lbs 4 Ozs of mainly silvers taken on waggler and maggot. In the middle of the heatwave, with the river very low and clear, finding fish was difficult. But Ken Arnold made up for his lost fish in the first match by winning this one with an excellent weight in the conditions of 29 Lbs 8 Ozs from peg 13. Runner-up was Brian Tinman with 13 Lbs 8 Ozs from his favourite peg 5 (you must be on first name terms with the fish by now Brian!) and third was match 1 winner, Paul (no sick note) Harrison from peg 8 with exactly 10 Lbs.
