Sunday 25 September saw 20 anglers turn out for the annual Float Only match. Numbers usually drop for this one, but it has been a traditional match within the Society for many decades and does present a challenge of a different nature. The winner was Ken Arnold with 10 Lbs 13 Ozs, but Ken was sure he'd chucked it away by losing several good fish. Second was Graham Jones with 7 Lbs 4 Ozs and third was Nick Bastock with 5 Lbs 15 Ozs. This now means that with just two rounds left to fish, Graham Jones leads the league with 45 points; Ken Arnold is second on 40 and Reg Ford, Carl Duckett and Tony Randall are joint third on 37 points. These are the only five anglers who can now win the league. For the full result, click on the link below.

Are you fed up with the ridiculous situation regarding the Government's stance on culling cormorants? Then here's a chance to do something about it. Just download the form below and get as many anglers as you know to sign it, then send it in. It's the only way we will get something done about this problem. The second file explains the background to this petition and where to get further information.

A member last week had to clear a huge amount of litter from peg 27. There were empty meat tins, pellet bags, hook packets etc etc. This is absolutely disgraceful and should not be happening. The angler concerned knows who he is and it will not take me long to catch you if you continue with this appalling practice. The committee will take disciplinary action against you and anyone else caught littering the fishery and could include being banned from LAS waters.
You have been warned!

Our local tackle shop, Jayne's Tackle in Wellington, is owned by Bob And Jayne Smith. Jayne has often put Bob to shame when they fish our waters by catching more fish, or bigger fish than him. But after a few years of trying, he finally managed to reach a personal goal by catching a salmon from our river this year. In fact, he did not only catch one, but two! The link below will take you to a shot his 18 pounder and, when I get more information about it, I'll let you know. But I do know that Jayne will have to try very hard to beat that!

On a very windy, but very mild day, the seventh round of our Summer League was fished on 11 September. The river had seen about 3 feet of fresh water in the week and although it had run off about half of this, there was still a nice colour on the day. Tony Randall put in some unusual pegs for a change and this threw up some reasonable weights from some unexpected places. Tony himself ran out eventual winner with 21 Lbs 10 Ozs from peg 102. His weight was made up of 5 barbel and he lost one. Carl Pavey was second with 20 Lbs 14 Ozs from peg 12, a 3 barbel and one chub haul. Third was Dave Upton with 18 Lbs 4 Ozs from peg 33 and fourth was Simon Marvin from peg 88 with 15 Lbs consisting of 3 barbel.
There are now only 6 points separating the top 5 anglers in the league and with 3 matches remaining, it is anyone's. With the "Big One" now having been fished, the next round sees the Float Only match. Who will win it? Watch this website for details soon after the 25 September.

Thanks go to Dave Loveridge for pointing out that there are no specimen fish records on the website for our water. This is mainly because they do not exist! But, as a start, I have gone back through the match caught records to 2005 and produced the attached list. These fish have been verified and witnessed at the weigh in at matches. Now I know that this almost certainly will be challenged, as there have been many more heavier specimens taken. But they need to be verified and witnessed, so unless another member can verify your claim, I'm afraid it can't be accepted. Anyway, have a look at the list by clicking on the link. I think it makes interesting reading, but what do you think?

The hoped for rain did not fall anywhere near enough heavily to raise levels of the river by 28 August, but results were better than expected, given the conditions. Carl Duckett ran out eventual winner from unfancied peg 5 with 2 barbel and 5 chub for 25 Lbs 2 Ozs. Carl said "If canoes had not come through my swim, I could probably have doubled that weight. After they came through the peg it just died." Second was Graham Jones with 23 Lbs 6 Ozs and third was Nick Bastock with 17 Lbs 3 Ozs. This result makes it very tight at the top of the points table, with Graham Jones leading by just two points on 36 and Carl Duckett second on 34, with Reg Ford on 33. With 40 points up for grabs in the last four rounds, the Angler of the Year title could still be won by at least a dozen men. For the full result, just click on the link below.
