SUMMER LEAGUE - MATCH 2

by Bernie Jones 7 July 2017

Just 19 match anglers contested the second round of the league on 2nd July 2017 on a low river and a bright sunlit day. Again, this made finding fish (other than bleak!) very hard going. But, once again, that man Dave Leary made it look easy with a winning weight of exactly 32 Lbs taken from peg 9 with varied baits including sweetcorn, pellet and meat resulting in barbel and chub coming to his net. Second was Graham Jones from peg 78 with 16 Lbs 2 Ozs and third was Ken Arnold with 14 Lbs 4 Ozs from peg 76. For the full result, please click on the link. FIRST WINTER LEAGUE MATCH RESULT

by Bernie Jones 17 November 2014

On a cold, dank 9th November, 7 hardy Winter League anglers turned out for the first leg of this year's series of matches on Cressage Meadow. The river was up and rising, which made it really hard to catch. The winner was Ken Arnold from peg 33 with 2 fish for 11 Lbs 4 Ozs. Second was Clive Biddulph from peg 22 with 5 Lbs 12 Ozs, third was Ray Armstrong from peg 32 with just 2 Ozs and last man to catch was Kevin Nicholls with just 1 Oz. A grueller!

Will Carr kindly offered to run this year's league and has booked the second match at Melverley Farm Pools, Telford. This is Situated off the A442 four miles north of Wellington, Sat Nav TF6 6QX.

As Will is on holiday for this one, if you would like to fish this match, please contact on Nick Bastock on 07747 030106 , to let him know you will be there, so pegs can be booked. 10th SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS (WINES & SPIRITS)

by Bernie Jones 9 November 2014

The final match of the Summer League series resulted in an emphatic win for Ken Arnold, with a great weight of 49 Lbs 8 Ozs from peg 22. Second with 28 Lbs 8 Ozs was Gary Stinton and third was Graham Jones with 16 Lbs, which was enough for Graham, once again, to secure the Angler of the Year Trophy with a points tally of 68. Ken was second with 64 (if only you hadn't gone to Scotland for a holiday and had fished match 9!) and third was Paul Harrison on 59. For the full result, just click on the link below.

Graham Jones has won the Angler of the Year Trophy in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013 and now again in 2014. A remarkable achievement, so well done Graham. Can you please have a year off next season to give the rest of us a chance?!

FOURTH SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 10 August 2014

After some welcome overnight rain that put a couple of inches on the river level and a slight tinge to its colour, the wind got up and produced a strong downstreamer. But the day was hot and sunny, which did not greatly help. Winner of the match was Ken Arnold from peg 76 with 23 Lbs 8 Ozs, which consisted of 4 barbel all taken late on, after the river rose a little. Second was David Leary from the other fancied peg, peg 6 with 3 barbel for 17 Lbs 8 Ozs. Third was Gary Stinton with 2 barbel for 12 Lbs 2 Ozs from peg G on the Buildwas water.

Things are starting to tighten at the top now with Paul Harrison still in pole position on 28 points, but Graham Jones has closed the gap with 25 points and Ken Arnold has entered the fray with this win and it has brought him into third spot with 22 points.

SECOND SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 10 August 2014

Apologies to everyone for this late post, but my father died and I had to sort out his funeral and estate.

This match was fished on a hot day with low river conditions, which made finding barbel difficult. Paul Harrison (with the golden arm!) drew fancied peg 76 and managed to return 3 good barbel to the scales for exactly 16 Lbs. Second was Graham Jones from peg M on the Buildwas water with 2 barbel and a bream for 14 Lbs 6 Ozs and third was our Match Secretary, Dave Upton from peg 88 with 2 barbel for 11 Lbs 6 Ozs.

Early days yet for the league, but with a win and second place to both Graham Jones and Paul Harrison they are equal on points, with Graham edging it on weight by 11 Lbs.

THIRD SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 10 August 2014

As I was attending my father's funeral, I missed this match. Many people were also on holiday, so the turnout was low. But stalwart matchman, Pat Nolan managed to tempt 5 barbel from peg 6 to take the win, with 25 Lbs 6 Ozs. Second was Colin Morris with 12 Lbs 8 Ozs and third, Colin's travelling buddy from Llangollan, David Leary with 11 Lbs dead. I don't have peg details.

As Graham Jones was not present, this allowed Paul Harrison to take the lead with 24 points to Graham's 19. In third place now is Colin Morris on 15. So it's starting to get interesting.

9th SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 8 October 2012

After a lot of rain in the week preceding this match, the river was high, but had a good colour. The banks were very slippery as much silt was deposited during the deluge too. But all this did not deter 21 anglers from turning out for this, the 9th match in the 10 match series.

Not really sure why it did not fish better, but the winner from peg 32 was Gary Stinton with 17 Lbs 9 Ozs (3 barbel); second was Reg Ford from peg 25 with 2 barbel for 12 Lbs 9 Ozs; third was Paul (not Phil!) Cooper from peg 104 with 12 Lbs 3 Ozs and joint fourth were Adam Barsby (peg 72) and Nick Bastock (peg 22) both with 10 Lbs 2 Ozs.

This now means that Dave Hopwood still leads the league with 47 points and Adam Barsby and Graham Jones are the only anglers to catch him, having 41 and 40 points respectively. With just the Wines & Spirits match to go on the 21st October, it will come down to the wire. Who will eventually be crowned Anger of the Year? Read it here first!

10th SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS (WINES & SPIRITS)

by Bernie Jones 27 October 2011

23rd October saw the last of our 10 match Summer League series fished on a slightly coloured river, with just a few inches on. The wind was very strong and made life difficult for those anglers in exposed areas. Eventual winner, from a wind-swept peg 97 was Ken Arnold with a good weight for the conditions of 22 Lbs dead. Second was Steve (I'm only visiting!) Senior from peg 76 with a nag of 20 Lbs 13 Ozs. Third was Nobby Plant, who only started fishing our river this year, since returning from a life in France. Nobby managed to put 16 Lbs 9 Ozs onto the scales, but left at least that much in the river by losing 3 good barbel that would certainly have won him the match. There were bottles of spirits and bottles of wine, plus some "slabs" of beer that were won down to 10th place.

The Club Champion, for the second year running, is Graham Jones with a points tally of 58. Very well done Graham! Runner up is Ken Arnold, who just pipped Reg Ford in this last match, as Reg only managed to find a meagre 9 Ozs from peg 28. Ken finished on 50 points to Reg's 45. The Aggregate Weight Cup also goes to Graham with a total of 116 Lbs 12 Ozs but Reg will be runner-up with a weight of 111 Lbs 13 Ozs, compared with Ken's 98 Lbs 14 Ozs.

For the full result, click on the link below.

The Winter League starts on 6 November with the first match on the river. This will be fished on pegs 71 to 105, so the remainder of the water will be available for pleasure anglers. The next one will also be on these pegs on 13 November then 3  matches will be on various pools and the last one, to be fished on 5 February 2012, will be on the river on the same pegs.

8TH SUMMER LEAGUE MATCH RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 28 September 2011

Sunday 25 September saw 20 anglers turn out for the annual Float Only match. Numbers usually drop for this one, but it has been a traditional match within the Society for many decades and does present a challenge of a different nature. The winner was Ken Arnold with 10 Lbs 13 Ozs, but Ken was sure he'd chucked it away by losing several good fish. Second was Graham Jones with 7 Lbs 4 Ozs and third was Nick Bastock with 5 Lbs 15 Ozs. This now means that with just two rounds left to fish, Graham Jones leads the league with 45 points; Ken Arnold is second on 40 and Reg Ford, Carl Duckett and Tony Randall are joint third on 37 points. These are the only five anglers who can now win the league. For the full result, click on the link below.
