SUMMER LEAGUE - MATCH 3 RESULTS

by Bernie Jones 28 July 2021

This was the first Float Only match and was fished in extreme heat, with temperatures rising to over 30C. The fish were hard to find for most competitors, but Mick Woolvine managed to put an impressive weight of exactly 40 Lbs on the scales from peg 108. This was mostly made up of some decent bream taken on caster/hemp on a stick float, with a chub and a barbel for good measure. Well done Mick. Second from peg 80, was Jason Owen with a couple of nice chub and a barbel for 12 Lbs 2 Ozs taken on the stick float and maggot. Third was Ken Arnold from fancied peg 9 with chub on the waggler for 8 Lbs 8 Ozs. Tony Kilmister still leads the league with 25 points, with Paul Stych second on 18 and Jason Owen now in third place with 16. Early days yet, but will anyone catch Tony? This Sunday's match could well produce some surprising results, so watch this blog for the results. Click on the link for the full results.

CAR BREAKDOWNS

by Bernie Jones 19 July 2021

After a stressful time with a car breakdown yesterday, member Paul Styche has offered a few suggestions. Paul came back to his car after yesterday's match after helping other members back with their gear from the Buildwas section, only to find his car was "dead." Many attempts were made to find the fault, but he was left there on is own in the stifling heat until the RAC turned up to fix the fault. Luckily, he had plenty of water with him to drink. Paul says that members would be wise to join the RAC/AA or other breakdown service, as membership costs start from around £50. It is also wise to know the location of our car parks, should you need to direct them to you. Some of the services can find you from your mobile phone signal, but What3Words is a good idea to have in your phone too. But at least know road names to give directions. Also, think about how you park; you may need a tow. and the access to the engine bay may be required, so don't park with the bonnet against a fence or a hedge! Many thanks to Paul for these wise ideas.

Red Skin Disease in wild salmon

by Bernie Jones 6 July 2021

(update July 2021 by the Environment Agency)

This year we have received a number of reports of wild Atlantic salmon exhibiting ventral haemorrhaging consistent with Red Skin Disease (RSD). We are monitoring the situation on all our major salmon rivers and working with partners across the UK to better understand its cause and impact.

Red Skin Disease is a condition of wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout characterised by haemorrhaging along the underside of the body. Severe cases have been associated with mortality, usually in conjunction with secondary infections. It was first reported in rivers draining into the Baltic Sea and Northern Atlantic around 2018 and has since been observed in parts of the UK. The cause of RSD is currently unknown.

We have been collating reports of skin lesions in wild salmonids from across England and have issued regular guidance to our staff, anglers and stakeholders on what to look out for, what to do if disease is suspected, and the need to report any cases to us promptly. We are also working closely with colleagues in Natural Resources Wales to monitor and collate reports.

We have had no reported cases of mortality associated with ventral haemorrhaging in wild salmonids in England, but have received reports of a small number of fish caught by anglers showing changes consistent with RSD. Our staff who operate salmon traps as part of our national index monitoring programme have also observed a small number of cases.

We are asking anglers to be vigilant but not to remove or handle any fish in distress. Also for anglers to carefully take photographs of fish exhibiting any unusual marks if safe to do so, to practice good biosecurity, and to adhere to our guidance on disinfection or to 'Clean, Check, Dry' equipment after fishing and before moving to other waters.

To report dead or dying fish, please contact our incident hotline immediately: 0800 80 70 60. For further information on RSD please contact our National Fisheries Laboratory: 02084 745244 or 07825 111723 / fish.health@environment-agency.gov.uk
