28 December 2017
Melverley Farm, Birches Pool was the venue for the third round of the current Winter League, which was fished on 3rd December 2017. The day was quite mild for the time of year and started very calm, which is unusual for this venue as it normally blows a gale. The wind did spring up towards the end of the match, but this didn't put the fish off. Eventual winner was Nick Bastock with 35 Lbs 8 Ozs taken on the pole at mid-distance and against the island on pellet. Second was yours truly with 27 Lbs exactly consisting of carp to 4 Lbs and F1s with a few good roach taken on feeder and long pole with maggot. Third was Richard Perrins from the next peg from me, with a weight of 21 Lbs exactly mostly taken on the feeder against the island, plus a few fish taken on the pole at about 6m. The unfortunate Pat Atkins had to retire half way through the match, as he was feeling very poorly. We later learned that he spent a few days in hospital recovering. Everyone will want to wish you well Pat, especially as we weighed in what you had caught till you had to leave and you still came 6th! Ken Arnold, on the other side of me, faltered (for once!) with just 4 Lbs exactly and just two points, which allowed Brain Tinman to edge in front in the league with 26 points and Ken now in second place with 20. I am now third on 18. With 7 more rounds to go, anything can happen though. The next one is on Monkhall Fishery's Swallow Pool on 28th January 2018. Bit of a gap, but a venue that will be well worth the wait! Read the result here. For the full results so far, click on the link.
