We were fortunate to have Harry Ballard from the Environment Agency's West Midlands Fishery Team drop in to the pub at the end of yesterday's match. He brought with him some "Scale Kits" for our members to use to collect chub and barbel scales to help with study of the health of our fish stocks.
He also has sent details of the River Severn Barbel - Mark/Recapture Study. It is very important for our members to know about this and to make a return if they catch any of these marked barbel. It will also help to make decisions about barbel re-stocking in our water. So, please read this attachment.

With the river running very low, we saw 29 match anglers turn out for this first Summer League match. Considering the conditions the river fished well. But what a debut for new member Pete Sturmey. A fantastic net of bream from peg 118 on the Buildwas stretch weighing in 51 lb, approximately 20 fish taken mid river on a small groundbait feeder with maggot or caster hookbait was certainly an excellent catch on a clear and low river.
That bream bag appart, it was clear from the other decent catches that you needed to be drawn on swims with some pace to be in with a chance of a decent catch. A good turn out too with 29 members taking part today.
In second place, Jason Owen with a terrific float caught 40lb of small chub, dace and small barbel from Cressage meadow peg 9. Although a fancied early season peg, it was noted the usual bigger chub were either not present or not feeding, something replicated throughout the stretch on the day.
Third place was a barbel catch of 24lb 4oz taken on stick float by Neil Lawrence from Buildwas end peg 121, a catch which could have been better if not for losing a fish or two on the submerged snags. Mick Wolvine finished in fourth with 22lb of barbel, bream and small chub from peg 95 on the esses.
Dave Hopwood finished fifth with 19lb from meadow peg 10, a brace of barbel from Taylors peg 77 gave Peter Owen 14lb 2oz and sixth place, closely followed by Rob Jackson and a catch of bream and small chub for 14lb and seventh spot.
John Twamley fished 13 on the meadow and weighed 13lb 4oz for eighth position, next, John Parsons included 'fish of the day', a good barbel estimated between 9 and 10lb in his 10lb 14oz catch from meadow peg 27. Reigning league champ Tony Kilmister was the last of the point scorers on tenth spot, weighing in 10lb 5oz from peg 103.
Final catches of note included a tie for eleventh spot, both weighing 9lb 8oz; Steve Oliver from Buildwas peg 107, the catch included a small barbel along with some decent perch and small silvers and from Taylors peg 102, Matthew Foyle who caught two barbel.
The breakfast to start the day from The Mill at Leighton was top notch, as were the welcome sandwiches and a pint at the results and post match inquest. The next round of the Summer League is on this Sunday 3rd July. PLEASE NOTE THAT AS THE LANDLORD IS ON HOLIDAY NO BREAKFAST WILL BE AVAILABLE. Howwever, there will be sandwiches after the match as usual.
Will those members who draw scales please weigh and record specimen fish. We need to record the best barbel, chub, bream, roach, dace, perch, carp, tench, grayling for the club records.

After starting the winter league back in November 2019 and having to abandon it in March 2020 because of the pandemic lockdown, we attempted to run a new winter league for 2020/21, only to have to abaandon it once more! So, third time lucky, we managed to fish all 10 rounds in 2021/22. The worthy winner was Ken Arnold with 82 points and 280 Lbs 14 Ozs. Second was yours truly on 68 points and 234 Lbs 14 Ozs. In third spot was Brain Tinman on 62 points and 318 Lbs 13 Ozs. The league payout will be made at the first river match on 19th June 2022. I’m very sorry to have to inform you that Johnny Jobson has died at the age of 74. A member of the Society for many years and a very good match angler back in the 1990s into this century, he will be sadly missed. If you wish to go to his funeral, it will be at Shrewsbury Crematorium on Wednesday 15th June at 1445 Hrs. RIP Johnny.

The first work party to ready the pegs for the coming season (which is now just 14 days away) is this Sunday 5th June. Meet at Peg 2 in Cressage Meadow at 0900 Hrs and bring with you a strimmer, scythe, shears, spade etc and be prepared to clear undergrowth from the 6 feet wide cut that our tractor has made along the top of the bank, down to the river's edge. There are 125 pegs that need to be done, so the more members that turn up the less time it will take. Be sure to bring a drink with you and maybe a sandwich. The forecast doesn't look great so some waterproofs would also be a good idea. See you on Sunday!

Due to heavy rain and a rising river, the Scramble Match has been cancelled for Sunday 6 March. The banks are treacherously slippery and the meadow will not be drivable. Please spread the word to any other members you know.
